Pine from Stone

I found this little immature ponderosa pine tree growing from seemingly nothing in the Bonito Lava Flow near Sunset Crater. Although mostly bare rock, small signs of life could be seen here and there on the lava flow, this small pine being one of them. Here's a previous post with more signs of life on the Bonito Lava Flow.

I find these hearty little pines amazing. I used to hike in the mountains in Colorado and would find trees like this seemingly spouting up out of a bare rock. Incredible!

By the way, check out this months "Outdoor Photographer" for a story and pics on a truely amazing and long lived mountain conifer.

Surprised it can find enough water to survive. Great image.
