Just northeast of Flagstaff is an area called the Painted Desert. It gets its name from the colorful rock strata that make up the cliffs in the area. Often you can see different shades of red, purple, blue and gray in one cliff wall. It makes for some stunning photography. This photo is of chunks of red Moenkopi sandstone eroding from a canyon wall near Wupatki National Monument.
